Munich's pedestrian axis — from Karlsplatz to the Viktualienmarkt

Eighteen stops in two and a half kilometres, on one line across Munich from west to east: the surviving city gate, four churches, a fountain for a composer born across the street, a bronze boar with a snout rubbed bright, the street the salt came along, Marienplatz in its parts, an inner courtyard you walk into free through the gate under the town hall tower, the oldest church in the city, and at the end the market that got the hospital's ground, six fountains for comedians and a beer garden under chestnut trees. A stop every 145 metres on average, and the longest gap between any two is three and a half minutes' walking.

The curve of Karlsplatz closing around the Karlstor gate.

This is the starting point, so there is no stop before it. The exit from the Karlsplatz S-Bahn and U-Bahn station opens straight onto the square, a few dozen metres from the fountain. Stand by the round fountain facing the Karlstor gate to the east — that is the way the walk goes on.

The square is officially named after Karl Theodor, the prince-elector — one of the princes of the Holy Roman Empire who alone held the right to elect the emperor — who in 1791 had the fortifications and the city wall here taken down. But for generations locals have called it the Stachus, after an innkeeper named Eustachius Föderl who once traded on this spot. Until 1972 cars and trams drove straight across it and through the Karlstor into Neuhauser Straße; that traffic only stopped when Munich turned its centre into a pedestrian zone.

In front of you a semicircle of yellow arcaded buildings curves around a wide round fountain whose spray reaches the stone blocks people sit on. The Karlstor gate stands in the middle of that curve, and behind it the pedestrian street runs on into the old town. Under your feet is a whole underground shopping level, and people are pouring in and out of the S-Bahn, U-Bahn and tram stops on every side.

Until 1972 cars and trams crossed this square, driving straight under the Karlstor arch and on into Neuhauser Straße. Only when Munich turned its centre into a pedestrian zone — in the run-up to the Olympic Games it hosted that year — did that traffic stop, and the street you are standing in front of became what it is today.

The square has two very different seasons. On a hot summer day the round fountain is where it cools off, and in winter Munich's ice-skating event, the Eiszauber, comes here and you can skate on the square itself.

The Karlstor

The Karlstor between its two towers, and the way through into Neuhauser Straße.

Walk east from the fountain, about 150 metres, some two minutes — the gate closes the east end of the square and Neuhauser Straße starts on its far side. Stand in front of it from the west, so you have both towers, the arch between them, and the pedestrian street opening up behind.

The gate went up around 1300, part of the second city wall raised between 1285 and 1347, and first appears in a document in 1302. Until 1791 it was the Neuhauser Tor, named for the village its road led to; that year Count Rumford, with the architect Franz Thurn, rebuilt the flanking towers and the gate was renamed after the prince-elector Karl Theodor. In 1857 a store of gunpowder in the building beside the main tower exploded and damaged it so badly that it had to come down, and around 1860 the remains of the inner barbican went too. What you see is neo-Gothic, the work of Arnold Zenetti between 1861 and 1862, rebuilt in slightly simplified form after heavy damage in the Second World War.

Two flanking towers with crenellated tops, and between them a high arch that the pedestrians walk through. Only those two towers are original; the main tower that once stood between them is gone. Through the arch Neuhauser Straße opens up, and the gate is where the old town begins: the Ludwigsvorstadt to the west of it, the walled city to the east.

Four carved heads jut from the corners of the archway, and each one is a real Munich character: Josef Sulzbeck, a folk singer and bandmaster; Georg Pranger, Bavaria's last court jester; Joseph Huber, nicknamed Finessensepperl, who made his living carrying love notes; and Franz Xaver Krenkl, a horse dealer and coachman.

Something runs under your feet that you cannot see from up here: in 1970, while the underground Stachus shopping centre was being dug, a brick-built escape tunnel came to light — a way for soldiers, and civilians if it came to it, to get out behind the enemy lines. A short stretch of it is still on show on the centre's first basement level, by the fountain court.

The upper hall of the Bürgersaal, with its vaulted ceiling and gallery.

Go through the arch and keep east along Neuhauser Straße, about 175 metres, some two minutes. The front is on the left of the street at number 14, swallowed between the shops — look for a church door rather than a church building. There are two separate prayer floors here: the lower one at street level, the upper one up the stairs.

The building went up in 1709 and 1710 to plans by Giovanni Antonio Viscardi — the same Swiss Baroque architect the alley behind the Feldherrnhalle is named after. It was built as the meeting and prayer hall of the Marian Men's Congregation, founded in 1610, and paid for by it; it was not meant to be a church at all. Only on 13 May 1778, when the high altar was consecrated, did it become one in practice. On the night of 24–25 April 1944 high-explosive and incendiary bombs from the British Royal Air Force destroyed the upper floor down to its outer walls; the lower floor survived.

1890.From outside it is a narrow front between shops; inside a wide, bright hall opens up: a vaulted ceiling worked in stucco and fresco, a gallery down the sides, and round windows high up letting light in from above. The lower floor, the one that survived the bombing, was originally the congregation's print shop and was turned into a chapel after 1890.

הוא נמנה עם ההתנגדות הקתולית למשטר, מת במינכן ב-1 בנובמבר 1945, והוכרז מבורך ב-1987.Buried on the lower floor is Rupert Mayer, a Jesuit whom Cardinal Michael von Faulhaber appointed in 1921 to head the congregation here. Mayer saw the danger in National Socialism as early as the 1920s, and once the Nazis were in power he said publicly that a Catholic could not be a National Socialist. He belonged to the Catholic resistance to the regime, died in Munich on 1 November 1945, and was beatified in 1987.

This is a working congregation's church rather than a visitor attraction: during services go in quietly or wait outside. The two floors are separate — anyone coming for the tomb wants the lower one, entered at street level.

The Richard Strauss Fountain

The Richard Strauss Fountain facing the Alte Akademie, its Salome scenes running up the column.

Carry on along Neuhauser Straße for another 135 metres or so, some two minutes. The street widens into a small square here, and the fountain stands at its western end, facing the Alte Akademie. Get close enough to read the reliefs running up the column — from there they resolve into a sequence of scenes.

The fountain was put up in 1962, some thirteen years after Richard Strauss died, to honour the composer and conductor the city had produced. The sculptor Hans Wimmer made it and the city of Munich paid for it. Strauss was born just across the road: his birthplace stood on the south side of the street, opposite where you are standing. And where the fountain stands, a chapel of St Nicholas stood in the Middle Ages — which is why the street widens into a small square at this point.

A dark bronze column rising out of a shallow basin, with a wide capital at the top that the water spills from all the way round. The form leans on a classical column, in keeping with the ancient subject, and scenes from Strauss's opera Salome run up the shaft — the work that made his name and scandalised its first audiences.

Hans Wimmer, who made this fountain, also made the equestrian monument to Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian that stands on the north side of the Alter Hof — the stop that closes the royal half of this walk. His two works stand about a kilometre apart, at either end of the same old town.

Between 2012 and 2020 the Kripperlmarkt, the crib market, filled the space around this fountain through Advent and marked the western end of Marienplatz's Christmas market. Since 2025 it has shrunk a great deal and moved to the open ground in front of St Peter's — so if you came in December for the market, it is no longer here.

The facade of St Michael's with its niched rulers, the Frauenkirche domes rising behind.

Keep east from the fountain for another 115 metres or so, under two minutes. The church's pale facade is on the left-hand side of the street, in among the shops; stand in front of it, a few paces back, to take in the niched figures across the front.

2013.Duke Wilhelm V commissioned the church between 1583 and 1597 for the Jesuit order, and it is counted as the first Renaissance church north of the Alps. The huge barrel vault over the hall collapsed after the air raids of the Second World War and was rebuilt in the post-war years. A further restoration, four years long, was finished in the spring of 2013.

The pale facade is squeezed between the shops of the pedestrian street, with fifteen figures of rulers standing in its niches, a Wittelsbach family tree cast in bronze. Between the two entrance doors stands Hubert Gerhard's bronze: the Archangel Michael overcoming the devil, shaped here as a human-formed demon. Inside is one very wide hall with no pillars down the middle, roofed by a single white barrel vault — it spans more than twenty metres unsupported, and the only larger one of its kind in the world is at St Peter's in Rome. Front right, below the side altar of St Francis Xavier, an opening leads down into the burial crypt of the House of Wittelsbach.

Thirty members of the House of Wittelsbach lie in the crypt below the church, among them King Ludwig II, Duke Wilhelm V and Elector Maximilian I.

The hours change from day to day: Monday and Friday the church opens at 09:30, Tuesday to Thursday and Saturday at 07:30, and it closes at 19:00. On Sunday it is open from 07:30 until 22:00. The Chapel of the Cross opens only for early morning mass, and an admission fee is charged for the crypt.

Another 115 metres east along Neuhauser Straße, under two minutes. On the left of the street you will pick out a church front with a low porch, and in front of it, on either side of the door, two dark bronze figures. Stand between them: from there you have both the figures and the facade above them.

The building is the former Augustinian church at Neuhauser Straße 2, and since the middle of the twentieth century it has been a museum. The core of the collection was bought in 1934: Count Arco-Zinneberg's trophy collection was about to leave Germany for the Netherlands, and the Bavarian ministry for agriculture and forestry bought it at the last minute. That same year, on 22 October 1934, the Nazi functionary Christian Weber founded the association that pushed for a German hunting museum — a project meant in part to add to his own standing. The museum counts today among the most significant of its kind anywhere.

A pale church front with a low arcaded porch you walk in under. On either side of the entrance stands a bronze: a seated wild boar on one side, a big catfish on the other — hunting and fishing, the museum's two subjects, set outside before you have gone in. Stone figures sit along the roofline, left over from when this was a church rather than a collection.

Look at the boar's snout and the fish's back: the bronze there is bright and polished while everything else is dark. That is not design but wear — decades of hands touching the same spot until the patina came off and the metal under it showed through.

The former church is a paying museum now, and anyone who came for the bronzes does not need to go in at all — they stand on the street, free, at any hour. Keep east along Neuhauser Straße for another 90 metres or so and turn left, north, into Frauenplatz — about 205 metres in all, some three minutes. The two domed towers signal the way over the rooftops the whole time. The cathedral entrance faces Frauenplatz; stand in front of it, and the footprint marked in the floor is right by the door.

ההפצצות של מלחמת העולם השנייה החריבו את הפנים, אך את יצירות האמנות והחלונות החשובים הספיקו להוציא מראש למקום מבטחים; שיקום מקיף נוסף נמשך בין 1989 ל-1994.The foundation stone was laid in 1468, and the man in charge was Jörg von Halspach, a mason who worked in brick — which is exactly why he was chosen, since the church was meant from the start to be a brick building and not dressed stone. It was finished in only twenty years, an unusual span for a building of that size. The onion domes went onto the towers only around 1525, after Jörg von Halspach had died and the War of the Landshut Succession had made further work impossible. The bombing of the Second World War gutted the interior, though the most important artworks and windows had been taken to safety beforehand; a further full restoration ran from 1989 to 1994.

Two bare brick towers carry green onion domes, and it is those that make the church Munich's skyline signature. They are almost exactly the same height — the north 98.57 metres, the south 98.45 — and under a rule adopted in 2004 no building in the city goes above 99 metres, so what you are looking at is the ceiling of the whole skyline. The body itself is surprisingly plain: brick, with no ornament outside. Near the entrance a footprint is marked in the floor, called the Devil's Footstep; the legend has the master builder wagering his soul with the devil that no window could be seen in the church — and if you stand in that mark and look towards the high altar, you really do not see the side windows. A few steps on, in the body of the church, stands the empty tomb monument of Emperor Louis the Bavarian, the work of Hans Krumpper.

The north tower still holds a medieval treadwheel, which five hundred years ago hauled the building material up by human power. Its spire served from 1801 to 1927 as the zero point of Bavaria's survey grid.

Only the south tower is open to visitors. It runs Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 17:00 and on Sundays and public holidays 11:30 to 17:00, with the last ascent at 16:30. An adult pays €7.50. Children and young people aged 7 to 16 pay €5.50, which is also the reduced rate; children of six and under go free. A family ticket is €21. The church itself is open daily 08:00 to 20:00 and entry is free, but visiting is restricted during services — 18:00 on weekdays and 10:00 at the weekend.

Kaufingerstraße at midday, wall to wall with people on foot.

Leave Frauenplatz to the south and come back onto the pedestrian street, which by here has changed its name to Kaufingerstraße — about 220 metres, some three minutes. Stop in the middle of it, at its widest, and turn around: to the east Marienplatz opens up, to the west the street runs back the way you came.

This is one of Munich's oldest streets and part of the great west-to-east axis across the old town — which is to say part of the salt road, running from Salzburg and Reichenhall by way of Landsberg into Switzerland. The name probably comes from the patrician Chunradius Choufringer, first recorded as a witness in a document of 28 May 1239, who seems to have had an imposing house here. As a street name it first appears in 1316, and together with the Rindermarkt it is the oldest street name in the city. Its eastern end was once closed by the Obere Tor, later known as the Schöner Turm.

A wide paved pedestrian street with no kerbs and no roadway — one continuous surface wall to wall, filled end to end with people through the day. Shopfronts from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries line both sides, replacing the Baroque merchants' houses that stood here. Over the rooftops on the north side the two Frauenkirche towers show, the ones you have just come from.

The name lost a letter on the way. It was originally written Kaufringerstraße, with an r after the f; that r first dropped out in 1379, and from the seventeenth century at the latest only the present spelling was used. Because the shortened form looked like a place name, a theory grew up that a village called Kaufing had given the street its name — a village for which there is no evidence at all, and which is why some people still wrongly write the street as two words.

This is one of Munich's main shopping streets and it is crowded to match: on Saturdays and through the Christmas market the walking here is slow, and the short distance to Marienplatz can take twice as long as it should. If you are with a pushchair or a string of people, agree a meeting point before you set off down it.

The gilded Mary at the top of the column, above the Marienplatz roofs.

Carry on east for another 145 metres or so, some two minutes, and the street spills out into Marienplatz. The column stands in the middle of the square and is impossible to miss. Stand at its foot and look up — then look down, at the four corners of the base.

During the Thirty Years' War the elector Maximilian I vowed to raise a work pleasing to God if Munich and Landshut were spared. Munich was in fact taken by the Swedish army, whose commanders pressed for its destruction — in part as revenge for the destruction of Magdeburg. The Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus overruled them, and both cities came through. What happened was called the miracle of Munich, and in 1638 Maximilian raised this column of Adnet marble. It was consecrated on 7 November that year, the first Sunday after All Saints, by the bishop of Freising, Veit Adam von Gepeckh.

A marble column over eleven metres high with a gilded figure of Mary at the top — here she is the Patrona Bavariae, the patron of Bavaria. A long Latin inscription on the base sets out the vow and what it preserved: homeland, cities, army, house and hopes. At the four corners of the base four armed cherubs fight four beasts — a serpent, a lion, a dragon and a basilisk — and each beast is an affliction: heresy, war, famine and plague.

At the consecration, the story goes, Maximilian spoke a short prayer written by the Jesuit poet Jakob Balde: five Latin words all beginning with r, which run roughly as — the goods, the ruler, the order, the land and the religion, keep them for your Bavarians, Virgin Patron. Nearly four hundred years on that is still the line that explains why this column stands here, in the middle of the square, rather than inside a church.

12:30.The column doubles as the spot people stand on to watch the Glockenspiel, so at showtimes the ground around it packs with a crowd all looking up at the tower. If you came for the column itself rather than the show, come before 11:00 or after 12:30.

The New Town Hall and Marienplatz seen from the Alter Peter tower.

From the column, turn north to the long front that closes the square — some thirty metres of open paving, under a minute. (The line on the map goes round further, because the footpaths mapped under this corner of the square belong to the underground station; on the ground you simply walk across.) Stand far enough back to take the whole tower in at once: the Glockenspiel is in it, roughly two thirds of the way up, and this is where people watch it from.

Until 1854 the square had no name of its own: people called it simply the market, the square, or the Schrannenplatz. In that year the grain market moved to Blumenstraße and the square took its name from the column already standing in the middle of it. The New Town Hall was designed by Georg von Hauberrisser, who won the job at twenty-five, and it was built in three phases between 1867 and 1905 — which makes the building that looks as though it has always been here far younger than the column in front of it and the old town hall at the other end of the square.

The town hall front runs 98.5 metres, with an 85-metre tower above it carrying the Münchner Kindl, Munich's coat-of-arms figure — a monk in a black hooded habit, drawn more and more over the years as a child. That tower holds the Glockenspiel: 43 bells and two levels of moving figures, run today on solar electricity. On the upper level the wedding of Duke Wilhelm V to Renate of Lorraine, held in February 1568, is celebrated with the jousting tournament in which the Bavarian knight beats his opponent from Lorraine; on the lower level the coopers dance the Schäfflertanz — the story goes that they were the first back out on the streets after a severe plague. When it ends most of the crowd disperses, and it is worth not following them: on the Weinstraße corner is the Wurmeck, the building's dragon corner — a copper serpent-dragon climbing the turret, with three reliefs above it telling the legend of the dragon that spread the plague through Munich — and under the tower a big gate opens into a whole inner courtyard, which is the next stop.

The Münchner Kindl on top of the tower is not just a symbol: it was modelled on Ludwig, the nine-year-old son of the sculptor Anton Schmid. Which means the city's emblem, the one on everything official in Munich today, is the portrait of one particular child.

The Glockenspiel plays every day at 11:00 and 12:00, and the extra 17:00 showing runs only from March to October. What happens at 21:00 is not the full display but a short appearance by the night watchman, the angel and the Münchner Kindl. Watching from the square costs nothing.

The Staircase of the Ages of Life in the grand courtyard, with the figures on its buttresses.

From where you watched the Glockenspiel, walk to the big gate under the tower and go through it — about 50 metres, under a minute. There is no desk, no ticket and no security check: this is a public courtyard, and the vaulted passage leads into it straight off the square. Stand in the middle of the courtyard facing west, towards the staircase tower that projects from the wall.

This is the courtyard of the same building you have been looking at from outside, by the same architect and from the same building years. Two more things open off it: the town hall's former cash hall, today the City Hall Gallery, which shows exhibitions free of charge, and the stairs down to the Ratskeller — the historic restaurant that fills almost the whole basement of the building, and which is currently closed. The courtyard can also be entered from the back, from Weinstraße.

The courtyard is rectangular and ringed with neo-Gothic arcades, and its west side is filled by a round staircase tower whose steps climb around its core. That tower is called the Staircase of the Ages of Life, and the figures on it are why: in the niches between its buttresses stand four figures who are four ages — a mother with a child, a youth, a man and an old man — and below them, on the consoles, the same ages return as half-figures of women. Among them other figures serve as water spouts, several of them recognisable Munich types. Look up as well: the carving does not stop at eye level. And the floor is not plain paving either — its mosaic forms one big labyrinth.

At the portal of the former cash hall, today the City Hall Gallery, two carved animals face each other and between them carry the city's opinion of your business with it: a dog whose tail wags for money coming in, and a pug that growls at money going out. The cash desk is long gone; the two of them stayed on at the door.

The courtyard is free and needs no ticket. The City Hall Gallery that opens off it is free too, and open Tuesday to Saturday 13:00 to 19:00 and Sunday 11:00 to 19:00 — so in the morning you will see the courtyard but not the exhibition. The Ratskeller in the basement is currently closed. In Advent the courtyard holds the Old Bavarian nativity by the woodcarver Reinhold Zellner, with 33 figures and 28 animals.

The fountain is low and round and easy to walk past — look for the big bronze fish sitting on the rim of the basin.

A fountain is recorded on this square as early as 1318, when it was still the Schrannenplatz, though nobody knows exactly where it stood. In 1343 a burghers' well is mentioned, later called the market well, and it already stood in the north-east corner — which is to say where you are standing. From 1471, once the first pipeline had brought water from springs outside the city, this was the first and for a long time the only fountain connected to it, running constantly from four brass pipes. Konrad Knoll's neo-Gothic fountain was built between 1862 and 1865 and destroyed in the war; Josef Henselmann made the present one in 1954, working surviving pieces of its predecessor into it.

A low round stone basin with a big dark bronze fish on it, mouth open. Around the basin three figures of butcher's lads pour water from buckets into it. Since 1991 the fountain has also had a low drinking point at ground level, for the dogs of Munich.

On Ash Wednesday the mayor of Munich comes down to this fountain, usually with the city treasurer beside him, and washes the city's empty purse in the water. The idea is that it will then fill up again over the coming year. The custom can be traced back to the fifteenth century.

This is one of the best-known meeting points in the city, particularly for people coming in from the towns around Munich. Which makes it an excellent place to arrange to meet, and a poor place to look for somebody without having agreed exactly where by the fountain.

The Old Town Hall, its tower and stepped gable, at the east end of Marienplatz.

Another 95 metres east, under a minute, to the far end of the square. The pale building with the stepped gable and the tower is the one that closes Marienplatz; a passage runs through underneath it into the Tal. Stand on the open ground in front before you walk through. This is the last stop; the walk ends here.

Jörg von Halsbach, called Ganghofer, built the Gothic town hall here in the 1470s, and the city's governing council sat in it until 1874. It replaced an earlier building first recorded in 1310, whose whole complex burned in 1460 after a lightning strike; the lower gate tower of the first city wall was converted into the town hall tower around 1392. In 1874 the council moved to the New Town Hall, and in 1934 and 1935 the wide passage that runs through today was broken through the entire ground floor. The air raid of 25 April 1944 damaged the building badly, and the tower was left so unsound that it had to be blown up in December of that year before it fell.

A pale front with a stepped gable of a few big steps, and beside it a narrow tower with a clock and a sharp roof. The heart of the building is the council and banqueting hall on the first floor, its barrel ceiling carved in wood by Hans Wenger in 1476 and 1477, with a frieze of ninety-nine town coats of arms running round the vault. The tower itself now holds the toy museum, home since 1983 to the collection of the cartoonist Ivan Steiger — wooden and tin toys, dolls, teddy bears, trains and steam engines.

On 9 November 1938 Joseph Goebbels gave a speech inside this building, and it is taken as the signal that began the November pogrom — the night, and the night after it, in which synagogues were burned and shops smashed across Germany. The building you are standing in front of is Munich's town hall, not a party site, and that is exactly what makes the fact a hard one: this went out from here.

The great hall is used today for the mayor's and the city council's formal occasions and is not routinely open, so what you can actually see inside is mostly the toy museum in the tower. Note too that the famous Morris-dancer figures in the hall are copies: Erasmus Grasser carved the originals around 1480, and they belong today to the Munich City Museum.

The Church of the Holy Spirit and its tower above the Viktualienmarkt stalls.

Go through the passage under the Old Town Hall, or round it to the south — about 75 metres in all, a minute. The church stands just beyond it, where the Viktualienmarkt opens out; its tower, with the onion dome, is at the east end rather than over the door — behind the altar, not above the entrance. Stand at the edge of the market and look back at it: from there the tower shows above the stalls.

Around 1208 Duke Ludwig I, known as Ludwig the Kelheimer, founded a hospital just outside the old city wall — in front of the lower gate, the Talburgtor. That same gate was converted around 1392 into the tower of the town hall you have just been standing in front of. The hospital had a Romanesque chapel dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandria, first recorded in Pope Innocent IV's letter of protection of 1250 under the name church of the Holy Spirit of Munich. In 1271 the hospital was raised to Munich's third parish and the chapel became its parish church. The city fire of 1327 destroyed both hospital and chapel; a Gothic hall church replaced them, completed in 1392 by its last master builder, Gabriel Ridler.

From outside: a long body under a red tiled roof, a pale neo-Baroque west front, and a narrow tower with an onion dome at the east end. Inside it opens as a hall church — three spaces of equal height, with no tall nave and low aisles — recast in the Baroque. The great ceiling painting is the thing to look up at: it was restored after the war to the original, and among its figures is Munich's pretzel rider, the Brezenreiter.

The same circle that built the other churches on this walk worked here too. The Baroque interior was made between 1724 and 1730 by Johann Georg Ettenhofer and the Asam brothers — the same brothers who built the Asamkirche on Sendlinger Straße for themselves. And the west front, added only between 1885 and 1888 by Friedrich Löwel, was designed after the manner of Giovanni Antonio Viscardi — the architect of the Bürgersaal at the start of this walk, under whom the young Ettenhofer had worked as foreman. The three churches you have seen today are tied together by the same names.

The hospital itself is gone: after secularisation it was pulled down in 1806 to clear the ground for the Viktualienmarkt, and the market you are standing at the edge of sits on its footprint. The church barely survived either — in the Second World War it was destroyed down to its outer walls, the interior was first put back simply, and the Baroque painting was only returned later.

The glass case of Saint Munditia in St Peter's.

From the church head back west along the edge of the market and up into Petersplatz — about 175 metres, some two and a half minutes. The tower you are walking towards is in sight the whole way; stand on the open ground in front of the church, and anyone planning to climb waits their turn here, since there is no advance ticket.

2000.The parish describes this as the oldest parish church in Munich; a Romanesque basilica stood here before 1180. After the city fire of 1327 a new Gothic building was begun in 1329 and consecrated in 1365, and between 1381 and 1386 the tower went up carrying the city's first public clock. From 1630 the interior was recast in the Baroque. The bombing of 1944 and 1945 did heavy damage, rebuilding started in 1946, the high altar was reconsecrated in 1954, and the great ceiling painting was only finished in 2000.

The tower is Munich's classic viewpoint. From the top, Marienplatz and the town hall lie below you, the two Frauenkirche towers face you, and on a clear day — or a day of Föhn wind — the view stretches to the Alps a hundred kilometres off. From below, out on the market square, that same tower is what steers you back. Inside the church, in the fifth chapel on the north side, stands a black Baroque reliquary case trimmed with silver holding the complete skeleton of St Munditia — a catacomb saint from Rome whose bones were brought here in September 1677. In 1804 displaying them was forbidden and they were shut behind a wooden case; since the renovation of 1883 the skeleton has been visible again.

Inside the church, in a side niche, stands a complete relic of a saint called Munditia. It is a skeleton in a glass case, brought from the San Lorenzo catacomb in Rome, dressed in embroidered cloth and set with coloured stones. The church is free to enter, and this is the thing most of the people queueing for the tower never know they walked past.

19:30.The climb costs five euros for an adult and three reduced. The tower is closed on 1 January, on Shrove Tuesday, on Good Friday and on Christmas Day, and from 14:00 on 24 and 31 December. In the winter months it closes earlier on weekdays than at the weekend: 18:30 against 19:30.

The Viktualienmarkt's permanent row of stalls during shopping hours.

From the church drop south out of Petersplatz to the north end of the market — about 180 metres, some two and a half minutes. Stop where the stalls begin: from here the market opens out southwards in front of you, and the blue and white maypole — the accepted meeting point — stands a few dozen metres ahead, in the middle of it.

The market outgrew what Marienplatz could hold, and in 1807 King Maximilian I Joseph ordered it moved a few metres to the south-east — to here. The blue and white maypole was raised in the middle of the market square for the first time on 4 May 1962, and it has been the obvious meeting point here ever since.

The stalls here are permanent, not folded away at night: greengrocers, cheese, honey, sausage and flowers, in rows running between the trees. The maypole rises over all of it, its arms hung with painted panels of the city's trades. The ground you are standing on is the ground the Holy Spirit church's hospital gave up in 1806, and everything spread out here since has filled the space that cleared.

This market is Marienplatz pushed out: it stood on the square you have just come from until 1807, when King Maximilian I Joseph moved it a few hundred metres to the south-east, to here. Which means the last part of this walk follows exactly the move the market itself made. Today the city puts it at 18,591 square metres with more than a hundred traders.

The market is closed on Sundays. On the other days it runs from 08:00 to 20:00, but florists, bakers and restaurateurs set their own hours.

The Karl Valentin fountain with flowers laid on it, the beer garden tables behind.

Carry on south between the stalls, about 145 metres, some two minutes — you pass the maypole on the way. You are looking for a fountain with a bronze figure at its centre: a thin man in a hat and coat, holding an umbrella and standing on a stone ball. That is the Karl Valentin fountain. Stand in front of it, and the others are all measured from here.

Six fountains in this market are dedicated to Munich's folk singers and comedians, and they went up over a quarter of a century: Karl Valentin (Ernst Andreas Rauch, 1953) and Weiß Ferdl (Josef Erber, 1953) were among the first, then Liesl Karlstadt (Hans Osel, 1961), and last Roider Jackl (Hans Osel, 1977). Ida Schumacher's fountain is by Marlene Neubauer-Woerner and Elise Aulinger's by Anton Rückel.

From Valentin's fountain you can find all the others without a map. Some sixty metres east of it stands Liesl Karlstadt's, and a little north of that, already on the edge of the beer garden, is Weiß Ferdl's. About seventy-five metres to the south-east is Ida Schumacher's. Roider Jackl's and Elise Aulinger's are further north, up the rows of stalls. And not every fountain here is for a person: a honey fountain and a potato fountain stand among the stalls too, named for what is sold beside them.

On the first Friday in August the fountains are dressed with flowers and free performances are held beside them. For the rest of the year too you will sometimes find a bunch laid on one of them — these figures are still known in the city, and not only from the fountains.

The market's beer garden tables, full, in the shade of the chestnuts.

Back north-east from Valentin's fountain, about 115 metres, a minute and a half. You come to rows of long tables in the shade of tall chestnut trees, in the middle of the market. Nobody seats you: you find a free bench and sit down.

This beer garden seats about a thousand, and it is the only one in Munich that sits inside a working market. The beer served changes: Munich's six big breweries rotate here every five to six weeks, and whichever is pouring is posted at the serving counter.

The tables are shared, and anyone arriving alone sits down opposite people they have never met. The market carries on around it — the cheese, flower and sausage stalls keep working while people drink here. The chestnuts overhead are why the place stays cool at midday in August, and also why most of the tables are empty in winter.

This is the rule worth knowing at the end of a walk: you may bring your own food and lay it out on the table, provided you buy your drink here. So you can shop the stalls you passed on the way in — cheese, bread, fruit — sit down with them, and order only the glass.

Opening hours depend on the weather and on the hours the food businesses themselves keep, and there is no fixed timetable. The market as a whole is closed on Sundays.

Tips & safety

התוספות בתשלום שאפשר לבחור בהן הן העלייה למגדל האלטר פטר (חמישה אירו למבוגר, 306 מדרגות, בלי כרטיס מראש — מגיעים ומחכים בתור), המגדל הדרומי של הפראואנקירכה (7.50 אירו), רחבת התצפית של בניין העירייה החדש (מ-7 אירו, כל יום 10:00 עד 20:00, המעלית האחרונה ב-19:40) ומרתף הקבורה בכנסיית מיכאל הקדוש (נגבים דמי כניסה, הסכום אינו מפורסם).All eighteen stops here are free, and so are the town hall's grand courtyard, the City Hall Gallery inside it and the churches themselves — Munditia at the Alter Peter included. The paid extras you can choose to add are the Alter Peter tower climb (five euros for an adult, 306 steps, no advance ticket — you turn up and queue), the Frauenkirche's south tower (€7.50), the New Town Hall viewing platform (from €7, daily 10:00 to 20:00, last lift at 19:40) and the crypt at St Michael's (a fee is charged, the amount is not published).
If you want to see the Glockenspiel, time your arrival on Marienplatz for 11:00 or 12:00. The extra 17:00 showing only runs from March to October, and what happens at 21:00 is a short appearance rather than the full display. Marienplatz is the tenth stop of eighteen, so you reach it about two hours after setting out from Karlsplatz.
The last three stops are the market, the fountains inside it and the beer garden — and the market is closed on Sundays. That is the commonest reason to move this walk to another day of the week: on a Sunday it effectively ends at the Alter Peter. The City Hall Gallery is closed on Mondays and opens only at 13:00 (11:00 on Sundays), so a morning walk will see the courtyard but not the exhibition inside it.
In the beer garden at the end of the walk, on the edge of the Viktualienmarkt, you may eat food you brought with you as long as you buy your drink there — so you can shop the market stalls and sit down with them. It is the cheap way to end the day.
